Heavy Rain Batters Kerala; IMD Issues Red Alert for Seven Districts

Heavy rain continued across Kerala on August 7, 2026, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod during the morning hours. The warning indicated the possibility of very intense rainfall, with isolated areas receiving more than 15 mm of rain per hour along with gusty winds reaching around 50 kmph. Several districts also declared holidays for educational institutions as authorities continued to monitor flood-prone and coastal areas. In Alappuzha, parts of Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad remained waterlogged, while officials warned residents to remain cautious near flooded roads, rivers and low-lying areas. Coastal communities were also advised to stay alert because of rough sea conditions and possible sea incursion.

End Food Distribution by Political Parties at Alappuzha MCH: Sudhakaran

Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran has called for an end to food distribution by political parties and organisations inside the Alappuzha Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) premises. He said that providing meals to patients and their attendants should be the responsibility of the government rather than political groups. Sudhakaran said a meeting involving officials and public representatives had earlier decided that organisations should not distribute food within the medical college compound. He alleged that the decision was not being followed and demanded the removal of party sheds and flags from the hospital premises to maintain order and neutrality.

BJP Demands Urgent Action to Provide Land for AIIMS in Alappuzha

The BJP has urged the Kerala government to urgently identify and provide suitable land for establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Alappuzha district. Party leaders said the Centre was willing to move the proposal forward, but claimed that progress depended on the state completing the required land-allocation process. Union Minister Suresh Gopi has repeatedly supported Alappuzha as a preferred location for the proposed AIIMS, arguing that the district needs stronger advanced healthcare infrastructure. He later said that if the state government formally acquires land in Alappuzha and communicates this in writing, further steps toward the project could be pursued.

Kerala Rains: Overnight Rain Swells Rivers, Heightens Flood Threat in Central Travancore

Heavy overnight rainfall across Central Travancore caused major rivers, including the Pampa, Manimala and Meenachil, to rise sharply, increasing the risk of flooding in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. Low-lying areas, particularly parts of Upper Kuttanad and Kuttanad, remained vulnerable as water levels continued to rise. Authorities stepped up monitoring, moved residents from vulnerable locations where necessary and advised people to stay away from swollen rivers and waterlogged roads. Continued rainfall also disrupted traffic and raised concerns over further inundation of homes, agricultural land and village roads in flood-prone areas.
